Supported formats on Android

Android video playback depends on both the OS version and the device's decoder. Wallboard's Files menu accepts MP4 and WebM video files; the codec inside the file must also work on the target player.

Video codecs

The Android platform lists these codecs and common containers in its supported media formats:

CodecCommon file and platform note
H.263MP4. Support is optional in Android 7.0 and later.
H.264 (AVC)MP4. The Baseline Profile decoder is part of Android's platform support; Main Profile decoding is required on Android 6.0 and later.
H.265 (HEVC)MP4. Listed for Android 5.0 and later; actual capability depends on the device.
MPEG-4 SPMP4. Listed in Android's platform support.
VP8WebM. Listed for Android 2.3.3 and later.
VP9WebM. Listed for Android 4.4 and later.

These are platform-level capabilities, not a guarantee that every Android signage device will play every encoding, resolution, or stream. Check the supported Android devices and test your finished media on the target player.

For live streams, see the Stream widget guide; stream playback has additional requirements beyond file decoding.
