Introduction to Channel Management

Channel (formerly: campaign) management helps organize and control how digital content is shown across different screens to meet communication or marketing goals.

Channels answer the key questions:

  • What to show, when to show it, and where.
  • They also handle how to manage conflicts, like which content gets priority, how often it plays (saturation), or how it's layered on screen.

What is a Channel?

A channel is a group of media files and content designed to play on digital signage screens.

  • It helps users control what shows up, when, and where—making content delivery more dynamic.

An administrator sets the rules

  • Who can publish
  • How much screen time each person gets
  • Where their content appears
  • etc...

Regular users just add or remove content within the access they’ve been given.

Why Should You Use Channels?

Channels offer more flexibility and control than standalone content.

  • They let users create custom playback sequences that can be shuffled for different moods or events, making the experience more dynamic and personalized.

A key feature of channels is automatic balancing.

  • At the top level, channels are balanced against each other based on rules like playtime, number of items, or playback slots. This ensures fair and consistent rotation.
  • For example, if all channels have the same saturation and time-based rules, they will play equally often.

This is especially useful for advertising.

  • Clients who pay more can be given higher saturation, meaning their content gets shown more often—no matter how many items they upload.

The Channel widget also remembers playback scoring,

  • even after updates or page changes, so you can make changes without interrupting the balance.

Other benefits

Multiple Channel Widgets in One Content

Multiple channel widgets can be placed on the same page simultaneously, all drawing from the same content pool.

  • In such cases, the system ensures that each widget plays different content by distributing the items from the shared pool in a rotating manner.

Zoning

Channel tags can also be used for zoning purposes.

  • For example:
If you have a large central zone and a smaller one on the side of the screen, you can configure the side zone to play only those channels that are tagged with 'side-bar'.

Offline playback

  • Channel can be played offline and do not require a continuous connection to the server.

Advertiser

  • Channels can be associated with channel advertisers to generate separate proof of play reports.
